Weather and seasons

Phu Quoc has two seasons set by two monsoons. The north-east monsoon brings the dry months, roughly November or December to April; the south-west monsoon brings the rain, roughly May to October or November. Which coast faces the wind matters as much as the month.

Two seasons, and why the boundaries blur

A 2021 peer-reviewed study of Kien Giang's climate, the area that now forms the western part of An Giang province, puts the rainy season from May to November and the dry season from December to April. It gives average yearly rainfall of about 2,800 mm on Phu Quoc, against about 2,100 mm on the mainland, and an average temperature of about 27.6 °C.

Travel guides draw the line differently. Vietnam Airlines describes November to April as the good months and May to October as the time of heavy rain and rough seas. So November and April are better read as shoulder months: often fine, sometimes not.

3 = usually calm and dry · 2 = mixed · 1 = rough sea or heavy rain likely. This chart is the editors' reading of the sources on this page, not a forecast.

The west coast is at its calmest in the dry north-east monsoon. In the south-west monsoon, beaches on the west and north-west coasts, such as Long Beach and Bai Dai, get waves and murky water, while the south-east beaches, Bai Sao and Bai Khem, are sheltered, VnExpress reported. A VnExpress article from June 2024 describes Bai Khem as calm and clear from June to September.

Long-term averages

These are station averages tabulated from Vietnam Institute for Building Science and Technology data, totalling about 2,882 mm a year. They describe a typical year, not the forecast for your dates.

April is the hottest month on these figures. July to September bring the most rain and the fewest hours of sun.

The same table gives the sunshine: about 230 to 257 hours a month from December to April, against about 137 to 147 hours a month from July to September. Night-time lows stay between about 23 and 26 °C all year, so there is no cool season to pack for; a light rain jacket matters more than a sweater. Sea temperature figures from an official source were not available to us, so we do not quote them.

Sea, wind and boat services

Weather closes the sea before it closes the land. Fast boats from the mainland stopped on 20 November 2025 when the north-east monsoon gusted to force 7 to 8, and every boat and ferry stopped on 13 July 2024 in the south-west monsoon. The canoe that capsized on 11 July 2026 on the way back from Hon May Rut Ngoai was hit by strong wind and waves; VnExpress noted it was not raining. A dry sky does not mean a safe sea.

The special zone publishes notices about strong wind and high waves on its official portal; boat operators must not sail in bad weather under the July 2026 rules.

Choosing your month

Dec–Mar

Dry and busy

Calm west coast and clear water for island trips. Lunar New Year is the peak: in January 2026 the An Giang tourism department said rooms were nearly sold out until Tet.

April

Hot shoulder

Highest average temperatures; rain days rise to about 12 on average.

May–Oct

Wet season

Swim on the south-east coast. VnExpress notes the island stays busy in the summer holidays and that seafood is plentiful and cheaper from May to November. Boat days can be cancelled.

November

Changeover

Rain eases but the north-east monsoon can stop boats; sources disagree on whether it is wet or dry.

When the season works against you

  • Snorkelling and island trips in the south-west monsoon. Water clarity drops and trips are cancelled; plan them in the dry months.
  • West-coast sunsets in the wet months. Cloud and rain often hide them, and the sea in front of Long Beach is rough.
  • Streams in the dry months. Suoi Tranh and Da Ban run mainly in the wet season, roughly June to October; in March they may be a trickle.
  • Tet without a booking. Rooms around Lunar New Year were nearly sold out weeks ahead in January 2026.

For how each region fares by season, see the four region pages, starting with Duong Dong and Long Beach.
